Windows 8 leaks show Microsoft Mobile and Office influences

New version of Windows will include ‘ribbon’ navigation and features from Microsoft’s mobile phone operating system.

Microsoft’s strategy of unifying all its various products looks set to continue with Windows 8.  New images of the operating system’s welcome screen use  the Windows Phone 7 lock screen, while new navigation techniques used in Office 2010 are used in Windows Explorer for file management.

The ribbon was introduced in Microsoft’s latest version of Office to replace large numbers of menus. It gives instant access to common features. Extending it to new versions of Windows itself would, for instance, allow quick synchronisation of files between machines and the cloud, as noted by other bloggers.

Microsoft is also known to be working on app store for Windows 8 and a back-up tool, similar to the Time Capsule that Apple offers. . Also included will be a new PDF Reader and an “immersive” mode designed for tablets.

A public beta of Windows 8 is expected by the end of the year; the current leaks show the software at a very early stage of development.

What features are in Windows 7?

We keep getting asked the comparisons of each version of windows 7. Below is a quick glance char to help you compare versions.

Windows 7 SP1 is released

Microsoft has issued the first service pack (SP) for Windows 7.

The update brings with it the usual reliability and security enhancements users have come to expect and is the first major tweak to the OS since its release back in 2009.

SP1 also includes new improvements to features and services in Windows 7, such as improved reliability when connecting to HDMI audio devices, printing using the XPS Viewer, and restoring previous folders in Windows Explorer after restarting.

Please fully test and evaluate before rolling out to all windows 7 machines, until 100% happy.

You also can easily deploy SP1 to existing Windows 7 PCs through management tools such as System Centre Configuration Manager and Windows Server Update Services.

Windows 7 and Vista mapped network drives disconnecting issue

In Windows 7 and Vista mapped network drives will disconnect themselves after a time and show a red cross on the drive icon. You will still be able to click on the drive and see/use the contents but applications that require a network drive will see them as disconnected and will not see files. If you try to disconnect the drive it will still sit there saying ‘Disconnected Network Drive’ – the only solution is to reboot.
This is because there is a default disconnect time for inactive network connections. To correct this and turn the autodisconnect off do the following:

  1. Open the command prompt as Administrator – to do this either click Start\All Programs\Accessories and RIGHT click the Command Prompt icon then LEFT click Start as Administrator or type CMD into the search box and hold Control & Shift keys down then press enter.

  2. In the Command box type:net config server /autodisconnect:-1

    and press return.

  3. Reboot computer.

Your mapped network drives should now stay connected – this is a permanent fix.

Also – when connecting mapped drives to Vista or Windows 7 – connect them with the full domain name of the server i.e.   \\servername.domain.local\sharename  NOT \\servername\sharename – Vista/Windows 7 insist on full domain paths in order to reconnect. You can connect using just servername but if it needs to reconnect it will not find the server.

how to recovered deleted items in outlook 2010

Microsoft Outlook 2010 has a build in option to recover mails deleted, even after the Deleted Items folder is emptied. For this feature to work you need to have an email account configured to use with a Microsoft Exchange account.

This feature might not work with other accounts and it might be disabled.

If you are using a Exchange account and still does not have this feature, you need to check with your administrator.

To recover deleted items;

1. In the folder from which the item was deleted, or in the Deleted Items folder, on the Folder tab, in the Clean Up group, click Recover Deleted Items. An Exchange account is required for this command to appear. If you are using an Exchange account and don’t see the command, contact your Exchange administrator.

2. Click an item, and then click Recover Selected Items . You can also select multiple items, press CTRL as you click each item, and then click Recover Selected Items.

Recovered items are restored to the folder from which they were deleted. Note: Your Exchange administrator specifies the retention time for deleted items. After this time elapses, deleted items cannot be restored.
